Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has been called up to the England under-21 squad by Lee Carsley, despite Eddie Howe warning that they are being 'careful' with how they manage his comeback from injury.

Hall, as well as United midfielder Lewis Miley, has been called up for the Young Lions' ahead of their European Championship qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Slovakia.

The 21-year-old made his comeback from a hamstring injury in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, replacing Dan Burn from the bench in the 66th minute.

The former Chelsea defender looked tidy on the ball on his return but when asked whether he would be ready to start in Sunday's trip to Brentford, Howe appeared to err on the side of caution.

"He's closer, definitely," Howe told reporters at his press conference on Friday morning.

"I think it was a really good cameo from Lewis but he has had very, very limited training time so I have to be careful with him.

"But, of course, he is very much in my thoughts because of the quality of player that he is. But he has had a difficult period in the last few months.

"He obviously had a serious injury and the hamstring injury he suffered this time wasn't serious but it kept him out of action for a period of time.

"He is such an important player and we need him fit for the long term."

As a result, how many minutes he gets for England under-21s will be interesting but, on a personal level, Hall will be keen to impress as he looks to win his place back in the senior England squad after winning his first two caps for his country last year.

Meanwhile, Miley has found first team opportunities at Newcastle fairly limited this season and it will be a good chance for the 19-year-old to gain some valuable minutes ahead of a busy period of the Magpies' season.
