Will new Browns’ play-caller bring Saban-style simplicity to the playbook?

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns are handing play-calling duties to Tommy Rees in a bid to spark the offense. On the latest Orange and Brown Talk podcast, the crew analyzes Rees’ philosophy, shaped under Nick Saban, and question if his focus on getting the ball to the best players is the antidote to Kevin Stefanski’s sometimes rigid system. This is a high-stakes gamble to see if a new voice can unlock the team’s potential.

“The thing that stood out to me is when he talked about Nick Saban kind of hammering home this idea of get your best players in positions to do what they do best. I mean, it seems so simple, right?” said Orange and Brown Talk host Dan Labbe.

Cleveland.com film analyst Lance Reisland added, “I would like to see Tommy Rees force feed Jerry Jeudy the ball early to kind of get his mojo going.”

Labbe noted that Rees’ approach may differ from Stefanski’s, saying “I almost feel like Kevin looks at it as the nameless gray faces line that we hear sometimes. It’s not so much Jerry Jeudy has to touch the ball, this is the play, this is where I want the ball to go. And to some degree it doesn’t always matter who it’s going to. And, we’ll see, it sounds like Tommy maybe doesn’t quite view it that way.”

The Browns are banking on Rees’ fresh perspective to revive an offense that has sputtered for much of the season. If he can successfully implement his Saban-inspired philosophy, it could be the spark the team needs.
