One of Victor Orta's worst Leeds transfer mistakes has just been made to look even worse - Opinion

Another of Victor Orta’s transfer mistakes just got a bit worse for Leeds United, as a player the club sold continued their impressive rise after leaving Elland Road.

In many ways, Daniel Farke has been operating with one hand tied behind his back at Leeds United, as the club continues to manage the transfer decisions made under the previous ownership.

Although Victor Orta had some major successes with Leeds, most notably the decision to appoint Marcelo Bielsa, the signings made in his final months at the club contained several costly mistakes.

However, the most damaging decision that he made may turn out to be the departure of goalkeeper Elia Caprile, who left Elland Road in 2022.

Having impressed in Serie A this season, Orta’s folly has been further compounded by Caprile’s inclusion in the Italian squad for the upcoming international break.

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Elia Caprile selected for Italy

Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso has named his squad for Italy’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway.

Caprile is one of the most notable selections in the 27-person squad for the two games, as he links up with Gattuso’s side for the first time.

If the former Leeds man does make his international debut, it would mark a remarkable climb to the top, having left Leeds without making an appearance and spending his final season with the Whites on loan with Serie C side Pro Patria.

Caprile is now one of the contenders to join Inter Milan in the summer, as they look to find their long-term successor to the experienced Yann Sommer.

Caprile decision highlights Leeds United’s goalkeeper woes

Although it is impossible to say whether Caprile could have reached his current heights if he had stayed with Leeds, the fact that he is a leading candidate to start for Italy shows how far he has come.

Caprile’s impressive rise also highlights the issues Leeds currently have as they look for a consistent number one.

Lucas Perri received criticism after the Brighton game and has been hit-and-miss since his big-money move from Lyon in the summer.

Karl Darlow showed the best and worst of his ability when deputising for Perri, but, at 35 years old, he is not the right candidate to be Leeds’ number one in the long term.

With Illan Meslier looking likely to leave the club in the near future, the Whites continue to struggle for a top-class number one.
