West Ham United midfielder **Mateus Fernandes** has been included in the Portugal U21 squad for a UEFA European U21 Championship Group B qualifier away to Czechia at 5pm GMT on Tuesday 18 November.
Fernandes and Portugal will travel to the Malšovická Aréna in Hradec Králové seeking to continue their perfect start to qualifying for the 2027 tournament, which will be hosted jointly by Albania and Serbia.
The young Hammer is captain of his country’s U21 squad and has won more caps, 19, than any of his current teammates at that level. Olhão-born Fernandes has four U21 goals to his name for Portugal too.
Luís Freire’s squad have scored 21 goals without reply in their opening four qualifiers, beating Azerbaijan 5-0, Scotland 2-0 - despite losing Fernandes to a red card - Bulgaria 3-0 and Gibraltar 11-0.
After ten rounds of games, the group winners will progress to the final tournament, and the runners-up to a play-off.
Portugal have never won the UEFA Euro U21 Championship title, but were runners-up in 1994, 2015 and 2021.
