Tarik Skubal-New York Mets buzz isn’t getting any quieter. This week, multiple analysts have either emphasized the Mets as a great fit for Skubal or downright predicted that he will be traded there this offseason. Others are merely monitoring the situation between Skubal and the Detroit Tigers. The New York Post‘s Jon Heyman talked Skubal while appearing on the B/R Walk-Off podcast on Wednesday. “I first reported that (Detroit and Skubal) were around a quarter of a billion dollars apart (in extension negotiations), even though Skubal hadn’t named a price,” Heyman said. That is a big, big gap, right? But we know that Tarik Skubal’s gonna want at least Gerrit Cole money as a free agent, which is $324 million. … I heard (the Tigers) offered less than $80 million. … They are so far apart, that no one can see a long-term extension coming anytime soon.” Despite the contract disagreements, Heyman asserted that he doesn’t believe Skubal will be traded this offseason. “Skubal on the move is the big question,” Heyman said. “I don’t see it. It makes no sense to me. I don’t think the Tigers should trade Tarik Skubal. He is the best pitcher in baseball.” In vast contrast to Heyman, MLB Network’s Lauren Shehadi outright predicted this week that Skubal will be traded to the Mets this offseason. It’s too far. …They’re just gonna let him walk (in free agency next offseason)? It just makes sense (to trade him).” Ken Rosenthal also contributed to the Skubal-Mets narrative, appearing on Foul Territory on Wednesday and calling Skubal and the Mets a perfect fit. Story continues below advertisement “When (Scott) Boras is the agent, and we know that he prefers to take his clients to the open market, and Tarik Skubal could be … the first $400 million pitcher, you know as a fan that that is the logical outcome,” Rosenthal said. “That he hits the open market, and that ultimately he signs with another team.” “The Mets would be the obvious team,” Rosenthal continued. “They need starting pitching. They have young starting pitching that they could include in a trade. They are completely a team that would seem to be obvious in this regard.” Story continues below advertisement “If you’re a Tigers fan, maybe you’re thinking, ‘Let’s get what we can right now.’ You’re looking at what is the best move for your franchise for this season and going forward, because I understand what Joel Sherman was writing — they should keep him and try to win.” “But I also see … what’s the endgame here? … One other element here that’s worth mentioning. Let’s say they keep him, and let’s say, for some reason, they’re out of contention in July,” Rosenthal continued. “The return they would get in July is probably not much different from what they would get right now.”
