‘Good news’ emerges about Sandro Tonali after comments about his future - Keith Downie

Newcastle United are in a very strong position when it comes to Sandro Tonali’s future.

Speculation surrounding the midfielder leaving St James’ Park has intensified in recent days, with Sandro Tonali addressing his future after the Champions League victory over Athletic Club.

The 25-year-old was unwilling to commit his long-term future to the club, but he did admit he was very happy to be a Newcastle United player right now. Tonali was very honest, and that is something that Toon fans will appreciate after the Alexander Isak situation.

Newcastle United are not worried about Tonali’s comments, and nor should they be. He has made it clear he wants to remain on Tyneside for now, while the recently announced contract extension protects the Magpies’ position.

One thing that could threaten that position is a release clause, but that is not something Newcastle need to worry about.

No release clause in Sandro Tonali’s Newcastle United contract

After Howe admitted he has no problems with Tonali’s comments, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has provided an update on the 25-year-old’s situation.

Downie has been speaking on his YouTube channel about Tonali’s contract at St James’ Park, breaking the news that the extension he signed during his ban does not include a release clause.

“There’s been a fear from many of you guys that he has a release clause as part of that [new contract],” he said.

“I can tell you exclusively that no, Sandro Tonali does not have a release clause in his Newcastle United contract. He didn’t have one originally and with his new contract and the extension, there is no release clause included in that, which I think is good news.

“It means that Newcastle can control his value, his price and it gives Newcastle more power when it comes to negotiating with other clubs if and when Sandro Tonali does leave Newcastle United.”

Tonali’s Newcastle United contract runs until 2029, with the option of an additional 12 months. In that respect, the Magpies have got him tied down until 2030.

Sandro Tonali could still sign another new contract with Newcastle United

There was excitement when news broke that Tonali had signed a new contract with Newcastle United. However, it was old news to those inside St James’ Park.

The 12-month extension had actually been signed in secret during his suspension, but only became public in October.

The new deal has strengthened Newcastle’s position when it comes to Tonali’s future, and it could still grow even stronger.

It has been reported that Newcastle could look to extend Tonali’s contract again, with a larger wage package befitting of a player of his importance.

Newcastle do have more pressing contract situations to address right now, but that is not to say that Tonali’s future will be put on the back burner.
