**AFTER last week’s successful hosting of the second Ashes Test, Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton FC’s new home ground, has almost certainly moved into pole position for a return visit from Rugby League next year.**
RFL officials were impressed by the facilities on offer at the new stadium and the reception that was given to them and the two teams, in front of a capacity crowd of 52,106.
And Everton officials were reported to have been happy with the way the stadium adapted to Rugby League and the response of supporters, with no behavioural issues having been associated with the event.
And that has made both parties think seriously about taking the Magic Weekend to Everton in 2026.
For many fans, St James’ Park is the most popular venue, but League Express understands that Newcastle United have trebled the asking price for the use of the facility next year, which would make the event unviable in that location.
However, there is still the possibility that the Magic Weekend may disappear from the Super League schedule next year because of the difficulty of squeezing it into an already congested, shortened season.
Next year’s Grand Final will take place a week earlier than normal, on Saturday October 3rd, to give the England squad time to prepare for the World Cup, which is scheduled to be played in Australia next year.
The RFL is currently considering a four-week play-off series involving eight clubs. With 26 rounds of the regular season with 14 clubs, that could rule out a Magic Weekend unless the play-off series is reduced to three weeks and no more than seven clubs.
