Sandro Tonali release clause update after secret Newcastle deal – Sky Sports

Speaking to the media after Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, Sandro Tonali spoke pretty openly about his future at the club.

The Italian’s comments caused some concern amongst the fanbase, even if it was nothing more than refreshing honesty, as he was unable to say that he’ll remain at the club in the long-term.

Instead of offering promises he couldn’t keep, Tonali admitted he is taking things “year on year” and would have to “think about everything” if a big offer to leave came in the future – even if he is “happy” now and not thinking about a move.

With this and the recently revealed contract extension in mind, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has released an exclusive on the detail of that ‘secret’ deal that was signed during his 10-month ban.

Downie reports that there is NOT a release clause in his latest deal, which runs until 2029 and includes an option of a further year to extend his contract until 2030.

There had been fears that an buyout clause did exist in his deal, but this is not the case and gives Newcastle additional security should interested parties come forward.

Asked about Tonali’s comments on Wednesday night, Howe has this morning praised the former Milan star for his honesty, insisting the world of football is too ‘unpredictable’ to make complete promises:

“I’m always comfortable with honest. None of us can make massive statements about future because football is so unpredictable,” Howe said.

“Sandro has been very honest but he is happy and enjoying his football. He loves it here in Newcastle and is happy in the team he is in and happy in the environment, and it is our job to maintain that so he can carry on his positive start to the season.
