Alan Shearer says what he thought of Florian Wirtz’s performance vs Real Madrid this week

Alan Shearer has been left in awe of Florian Wirtz after the performance he put in for Liverpool against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The Reds managed to beat Xabi Alonso’s men in a game where it felt like they were fairly dominant.

Liverpool were handed several goal-scoring opportunities, and to be honest, it felt like Thibaut Courtois was coming back to haunt Liverpool again, as every shot they had, the Belgian managed to save.

That is, until Alexis Mac Allister came along and managed to squeeze a header past the former Chelsea man and win the Anfield outfit the game.

However, Mac Allister’s outing wasn’t the only performance that caught the eye, as Shearer also singled Wirtz out for how well he played.

Alan Shearer thought that Florian Wirtz put in a solid shift against Real Madrid

Going into Liverpool’s game against Real on Tuesday, nobody knew how it was going to go.

Although the Reds were coming off the back of an impressive win against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, there were still question marks about whether or not Liverpool would be able to beat Los Blancos.

In the end, Liverpool’s first-team squad proved the doubters wrong with Shearer singling out Wirtz for putting in a “shift.”

“He had a similar one with Vinicius Jr. And the roar was like, oh! I thought, to a man, I thought every single Liverpool player was brilliant. I thought Wirtz put a shift in,” he said on The Rest is Football Podcast.

“Ekitike was brilliant. The midfield, obviously. Van Dijk and Konate, who have come in for criticism, I thought they were brilliant.

“Robertson was fantastic. The keeper made a save when he had to make a save in the first half, Mamardashvili.”

Arne Slot may have finally found Florian Wirtz’s best position

Since arriving at Anfield, Wirtz has been used all across the pitch.

Slot initially tried to shoehorn the German into the Reds’ midfield three, but since it was made clear that it was not going to work out, he’s been used as a winger.

Although the 22-year-old was one of the best number 10s in the world last season, due to how many low-blocks Liverpool face in the Premier League, they’re much less effective than they are in other leagues.

And, although left-wing may not be Wirtz’s preferred position, he put in a more than solid performance on Tuesday and due to the amount of freedom he was given on the wing, he thrived.

Not only does this prove that Slot may have found his best position, but it also outlines that, as long as the Reds’ fanbase perseveres with their new players, they’ll all come good eventually and prove their worth.
