Liverpool have been given a major boost as they look to bolster the heart of their defence
One of Liverpool’s biggest problems during their recent dip in form was how easy opposition teams found it to score past them.
Their run of four-straight defeats all featured goals conceded within the first 14 minutes, with their defeat against Manchester United seeing them go behind inside 63 seconds.
The Reds have kept clean sheets against both Aston Villa and Real Madrid and will hope to make it a hat-trick of shutouts when they travel to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
There remains questions over how the club’s defence will look in the long-term, with Konate out of contract this summer and Virgil van Dijk with 18 months to run on his deal.
Liverpool turn to Marc Guehi to future-proof defence
The Reds have been dealt an unlucky injury blow with Giovanni Leoni suffering a season-ending ACL injury during his debut for the club.
Liverpool had agreed a £35m deal with Crystal Palace to sign Marc Guehi on deadline day but the Eagles went back on that agreement at the 11th hour despite the England international undergoing part of a medical.
The Reds are keen to sign him in the summer when his contract at Selhurst Park expires. However, they may need to make a move in January with several clubs interested. One side linked was Real Madrid but they are not pursuing a move as they believe Guehi has committed to joining Liverpool.
Lewis Steele wrote in the Daily Mail: “Guehi remains on Liverpool’s list for a future signing – we have already debated whether that should be in January or the summer – and sources in Madrid reckon he has given his word to join the Premier League champions.”
Marc Guehi hailed by Stephen Warnock
Guehi has failed to let Liverpool’s failed move impact his form at Palace. Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock was full of praise for him during the recent October international break.
“Marc Guehi is a magnificent player,” Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live. “My concern for him is I hope he still gets that move to Liverpool. He deserves to play on the bigger stage, which is Champions League football. He has the ability to play at a club like Liverpool.”
