Liverpool are making moves to tie this important Anfield figure down to a new contract
Liverpool are currently ‘panicking’ over the future of one of their best players, as Real Madrid are circling.
Los Blancos have shown interest in several Anfield players recently. Having successfully signed Trent Alexander-Arnold, they have also been linked with Alexis Mac Allister and Ibrahima Konate.
The latter’s connection with the club has become one of the most discussed transfer stories in recent months. Konate has rejected a new contract opportunity with Liverpool and Madrid are interested in signing him as a free agent.
Liverpool eager to tie down Dominik Szoboszlai
The midfielder has impressed everyone from his teammates and fans to pundits and rival clubs this season.
Hungarian outlet Hir TV has followed up on the contract claims, reporting that Liverpool are now ‘panicking’ over the situation and trying to tie Szoboszlai down with a new contract.
The report claims that both Real Madrid and Premier League rivals Manchester City are interested in the 25-year-old, who join Liverpool in 2023 from RB Leipzig for £60 million.
Dominik Szoboszlai is ‘underpaid’ at Liverpool
There is one snag when it comes to a new Szoboszlai deal, though. The midfielder is reportedly ‘underpaid’ at Anfield on his current terms and his salary ‘hasn’t kept up with his explosive growth’.
While player wages are often argued and mostly speculated, Hir TV claims Szoboszlai is currently earning £120,000 per week with Liverpool. This is quite a way off what the Reds’ highest earners are said to be on.
Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who are both in the top bracket, reportedly earn in the region of £350,000-400,000 per week since signing their own contract extensions earlier this year.
Liverpool will need to ‘dig deep’ to come up with the kind of cash that reflects Szoboszlai’s position and importance at Anfield. Their reported new offer is said to be worth around £180,000-200,000 per week, which could be as much as £10.4 million per year.
Should the Reds offer this kind of money, it would move the Hungarian into both the club’s and the Premier League’s top salary bracket.
Szoboszlai is under contract with Liverpool until 2028 but several outlets are now reporting the club are eager to lock him in for the foreseeable future.
The Athletic report has also stated it ‘would not be a surprise’ if Liverpool consider Szoboszlai as a future captain contender in the coming years. Van Dijk is out of contract in 2027, by which time he will be approaching his 36th birthday and the Reds could be looking to name their next skipper.
