Dobbins suffers foot injury, calls out NFL’s enforcement of hip-drop rule

J.K. Dobbins eclipsed the 75-yard mark on the ground for the sixth time in 10 games on Thursday night in an ugly win over the Las Vegas Raiders. On a night where the Broncos offense looked like that of a high school JV team, Dobbins shouldered the workload down the stretch to ice the game ago get the orange and blue out with a victory.

The sixth-year veteran out of Ohio State finished Thursday’s contest with 77 rushing yards on 18 carries along with one reception for seven yards. However, there was one moment in the second half that had Broncos fans holding their breath.

On a second and 20 midway through the third quarter, Sean Payton went with a draw play that resulted in Dobbins getting tackled for two yards. However, Raiders defensive end Tyree Wilson tackled him from the side on what looked to be a hip-drop tackle.

No flag was thrown, and he limped off the field. He did return to the game and finished with a handful of strong carries to ice the game for the Broncos, but the reality that the injury was more serious sat in on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, Dobbins published an angry tweet seemingly directed at the NFL, saying, “BAN OR ATLEAST CALL THE MUTHER F***** HIP DROP TACKLE!”

Shortly after, news broke that he suffered a foot injury, likely from that play, and is now reportedly seeking a second opinion on how to treat it. NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero had the news.

The Broncos have a mini-bye heading into next week’s monumental game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and then have an actual bye following that. If the injury is serious enough, he could potentially miss that game against Kansas City, but with so much downtime this month, the hope is that he wouldn’t have to miss much more.

The hip-drop tackle has become a problem in the NFL as of late, and is the reason why the New York Giants are without star running back Cam Skattebo for the rest of the season after he suffered a gruesome lower-leg injury form one. The tackle was banned in March 2024, and is supposed to be met with a 15-yard penalty whenever it occurs on the field. However, the foul has been called just two times this season, once against Green Bay’s Micah Parsons and one against Miami’s Chop Robinson.

There’s no further information on the severity of the injury. If he were to miss the Kansas City game — and potentially more — it would be a huge blow for this already struggling Broncos offense.
