Jalen Ramsey made a commitment to Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin when he arrived from Miami last summer. He told Tomlin he would do whatever the team needed to win games. That versatility played a significant role in the Steelers’ decision to acquire him through trade.
Ramsey began the season at cornerback, where he moved around the formation to match up against top receivers. Injuries at safety forced the team to reconsider his usage.
The situation required immediate action. Ramsey transitioned to full-time free safety and made it clear he was ready to embrace the change on Friday.
“Like I told you all from the very first time I spoke to you all, I’m willing to do whatever it takes for this team to be better and win games,” Ramsey said, per Matthew Luciow.

DeShon Elliott suffered a season-ending right knee hyperextension that left the secondary shorthanded. Jabrill Peppers and Chuck Clark were dealing with their own injury concerns while veteran Juan Thornhill struggled in coverage. Newly acquired Kyle Dugger had minimal time to adjust after joining the roster.
Ramsey has adjusted quickly to his new position. His performance in Pittsburgh’s 27-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9 demonstrated his impact. The Steelers held one of the league’s highest-scoring offenses to just 20 points, limiting them to 10 through most of the contest.
Ramsey effectively neutralized rookie tight end Tyler Warren, holding him to a season-low 26 receiving yards. The defense generated six turnovers, marking their highest single-game total since 2010.
His presence at safety has provided the secondary with improved range and strategic flexibility. Ramsey is also expected to line up at free safety again Sunday night when Pittsburgh travels to Los Angeles.
The Steelers will face Justin Herbert and the 6-3 Chargers in another test of their defensive adjustments. His willingness to shift roles has become essential to maintaining the unit’s performance through mounting injuries.
