Crystal Palace discussing asking for key Chelsea player in swap deal for Adam Wharton - journalist

As Chelsea’s need for a new central midfielder becomes the topic of conversation again, Adam Wharton’s name continues to emerge as a top candidate for supporters.

The Blues are facing a difficult decision when it comes to the future of Romeo Lavia, after he looks to have suffered another potentially serious injury issue.

Chelsea fans are starting to give up on Lavia, and Wharton is one of the names that the club have done a lot of work on scouting in the past.

Graeme Bailey has predicted Chelsea will sign a new midfielder in the next two transfer windows, however a deal for the England international looks like it would be an expensive one.

They would love to be able to add a player into the negotiations to bring the price down, and have the potential perfect option in Trevoh Chalobah.

The centre-back briefly featured for the Eagles on loan when it looked as if his time at Stamford Bridge was over, and journalist Aaron Ramiro has stated that he is under consideration at Selhurst Park.

He said: “Trevoh Chalobah is being discussed internally at Crystal Palace as a potential makeweight in negotiations, with both clubs actively in talks.”

Wharton is the perfect signing for Chelsea right now, and would even be competing with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez for a regular starting position.

Chalobah struggling this season

There would be little hesitance for the Blues to part ways with Chalobah after they pushed hard to do so 12 months ago.

Despite him playing a key role under Enzo Maresca since his return to West London, supporters have highlighted a number of errors he has made this season alone.

Chalobah was called out for his defending against Sunderland recently when the Black Cats stung them in the last minute at Stamford Bridge.

His red card against Brighton essentially cost Chelsea the game, and was very disappointing considering how comfortable they were at 1-0 up.

With Josh Acheampong breaking through as a genuine option, the need for Chalobah is not as strong, and if they can get Wharton as a result the deal looks a no-brainer.
