The latest developments on Wolves’ search for a manager

The pair will hope to inspire a short-term response to give the new manager the best possible chance of extending the club’s eight-season stay in the Premier League after a lacklustre start which has seen the team record just two points from 10 league matches.

Wolves produced a spirited performance despite losing 4-3 in the Carabao Cup against the Blues just 10 days ago in what ultimately proved to be Pereira’s last home match in charge. They’ll hope to start the game in a similar fashion to how they ended that particular encounter. Ahead of matchday 11, we take a look at the latest surrounding Wolves managerial hunt.

Wolves hold talks with Inigo Perez

Reports from Spanish outlet Radio Marca, as per Sports Witness, have claimed that Rayo Vallecano boss Inigo Perez has received a ‘number of calls’ from Wolves about potentially becoming their new manager.

The 37-year-old former midfielder is a highly-rated coach in Spain that has been compared to Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola in terms of style.Perez worked under Iraola at Rayo Vallecano as assistant in the 2022/23 season and was supposed to follow the Spaniard to Bournemouth, however, this did not happen due to work permit issues.

He returned to Vallecano in February 2024 after a short break and subsequently led the Madrid-based side to safety following fears of relegation. In his first full season, he led Vallecano to eighth position - their highest since 2012/13 while in the process securing Conference League football and a return to Europe for the first time in 24 years.

Perez’s achievements and the comparisons to Iraola, who has been hugely successful at Bournemouth, made him a key target. However, it’s thought that the young coach wants to stay at Vallecano until the end of the season, meaning he’s rejected approaches from Wolves at this stage.

Rob Edwards to Wolves latest

Edwards, who is credited with leading Luton Town and Forest Green Rovers to promotion, played for Wolves between 2004 and 2008 at Championship level and also had spells in several different coaching roles.

He was quizzed about links with the Wolves job earlier in the week but appeared to play them down amid his ongoing promotion battle with Boro. However, he did not take the press conference on Friday after Middlesbrough rejected an approach from Wolves for the manager’s signature. At this stage, Edwards appears to be the club’s prime target and the most probable successor to Vitor Pereira in the Molineux hotseat.
