Liverpool call up 18-year-old boyhood supporter to first-team training

Liverpool returned to work at the AXA Training Centre on Friday ahead of their trip to Man City, with 18-year-old defender Lucas Pitt involved with first-team training.

Having been granted the day off on Thursday, the Reds were back in training two days before they head to the Etihad for the final game before the November break.

Arne Slot is still without Alisson and Jeremie Frimpong along with long-term absentees Giovanni Leoni, Stefan Bajcetic and Jayden Danns, but was boosted by the return of Alexander Isak.

Isak joined a 24-man squad put through their paces on the outdoor pitches, with the first team joined by two players called over from the U21s.

Along with the experienced Rhys Williams, Slot added versatile teenager Pitt to his senior ranks for a lively session on Friday afternoon.

Pitt, 18, was brought up in Formby and has been a regular in the stands at Liverpool matches home and away – including being photographed celebrating the 20th league title during the 3-2 loss to Brighton in May.

His day job comes as part of the Liverpool U21s, for whom he has made seven appearances already this season as well as one for the U19s in the UEFA Youth League.

A player of English and Spanish heritage – his middle names include Rafael and Jose – Pitt is a natural centre-back but can also play at either right-back or left-back.

Naturally he is not expected to be involved against Man City on Sunday but his inclusion shows the regard he is held in.

There were no other surprises in the Liverpool squad training on Friday, with no new injuries following the 1-0 victory over Real Madrid.

Slot could consider changes to the side which triumphant at Anfield in midweek, with the likes of Milos Kerkez, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo available, but it seems more likely that he will stick with a successful lineup.

That would mean Florian Wirtz staying on the left wing supported by Andy Robertson at left-back, while the trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister are retained in midfield.

Much will depend on the workload on those players, particularly the likes of Robertson and Mac Allister, and despite their injuries Liverpool are in strong position when it comes to depth.

Man City meanwhile are set to be without both Rodri and Mateo Kovacic for the 4.30pm kickoff.
