Major Rob Edwards development ahead of Birmingham amid Wolves head coach interest

ROB Edwards will not be in charge of Middlesbrough for today's game against Birmingham City, the Northern Echo understands.

Edwards' position was unclear after a dramatic Friday in which the head coach's scheduled press conference was cancelled and he didn't lead first team training.

Edwards is understood to have spent Friday afternoon locked in talks with [Boro](http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/football/middlesbrough?ref=au) officials, who were demanding answers from the head coach.

It came after Wolves' official approach for Edwards on Thursday afternoon was swiftly and firmly knocked back.

As of Friday night, Boro's stance was unchanged and they were still refusing to grant permission to Wolves to speak to Edwards.

But Edwards is understood to have expressed his desire to leave for the Premier League's bottom club. While an agreement has not yet been reached with Wolves, Boro made the decision to stand Edwards down from today's game.

It's expected that Boro will confirm who will lead the side in the next couple of hours.

Edwards twice refused to rule out leaving for Wolves when he was quizzed on the situation earlier this week.

It became clear at the back end of the week that Edwards was interested in the vacancy at Molineux, and his handling of the situation sparked anger on Teesside.
