Steelers Grab Perfect Complement To DK Metcalf In New 2026 Mock Draft

The 2026 quarterback class doesn’t look as strong as once expected, and with a real chance Aaron Rodgers returns to Pittsburgh next season, the Steelers might look elsewhere in Round 1. In his latest mock draft, Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema has the Steelers filling one of their biggest needs of the last few seasons with WR Makai Lemon.

“Lemon is one of the best separators in the wide receiver class, which is exactly what the Steelers need to complement DK Metcalf. He’s a slot-only type of receiver but has an 89.8 PFF receiving grade and is averaging a very impressive 3.29 yards per route run this season, showcasing how often USC wants the ball in his hands,” Sikkema wrote.

Ever since Diontae Johnson was dealt to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers haven’t had a premier route runner. They’ve had plenty of size, speed and athleticism with guys like Metcalf, George Pickens, Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III, but none of them make their money with precise routes and elite separation.

Lemon is listed at 5-11, 195 pounds and is in the middle of a breakout season at USC. Through eight games, he has 50 receptions for 776 yards and seven total touchdowns.

Look up any clips of his tape on X, and you’ll see eye-popping routes, toughness at the catch point and elite hands. Here’s one from Damian Parson on X.

Arthur Smith’s offense only features two receivers most of the time, but he isn’t going to be around forever. And Calvin Austin III will be an unrestricted free agent in March. If they are unable to retain him, or if they feel like Roman Wilson isn’t ready for a starting role, then they must secure the long-term future of the WR position. It would help Rodgers in the event that he runs it back for one last season, and it will help the quarterback that Pittsburgh eventually drafts as well.

Lemon is someone to keep an eye on for the rest of the college football season as one of the most electric receivers in the game right now.
