Manchester United's impressive streak of featuring an academy player in every matchday squad since 1937 continues, thanks to the selection of Jack Fletcher, son of Red Devils icon Darren Fletcher, among the substitutes by Ruben Amorim.
The club's commitment to nurturing and promoting homegrown talent has resulted in the inclusion of an academy player in every matchday squad for a staggering 88 years, covering 4,332 consecutive games. There were doubts that this remarkable run would continue after Kobbie Mainoo sustained an injury ahead of United's Premier League showdown with Tottenham.
The England international has been instrumental in maintaining the record this season, being the sole academy graduate in United's squad for the previous four matches. However, 18-year-old Fletcher - son of the former Scotland midfielder who won five Premier League titles at United - was part of the team travelling to London and made it into the matchday squad.
The England youth international is yet to make his first-team debut for United, but he did feature on the bench several times last season.
Fletcher and his twin brother, Tyler, switched to United from Manchester City's academy in 2023. Goalkeeper Tom Heaton, another academy product, could have been an alternative choice to preserve the record, but Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir were preferred, reports the Mirror.

United defines a homegrown player as one who joined the club before turning 21 and has not played for any other senior team. They must also have represented a junior team at United.
Amorim recently pledged not to be the manager who breaks United's longstanding record, and so far, the Portuguese coach has stayed true to his word.
The United gaffer stuck with a midfield duo of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, while Fletcher was picked on the bench, vying for his debut against Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount.

Benjamin Sesko was also among the substitutes for the match against Spurs, with Amad, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha forming the attacking trio.
Amorim has made three changes to his starting line-up following the draw with Nottingham Forest, bringing in Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu.

And United got off to a great start in the first half as Mbeumo continued his rich vein of form by giving them the lead in the 32nd minute.
