Sheffield United, Leeds United and FA Cup - The YP FootballTalk Podcast

"Disappointed" Middlesbrough have given Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolverhampton Wanderers about being their new coach.

The Teessiders rejected an approach from Premier League Wolves on Thursday, but have now relented after 42-year-old Edwards told them he wanted to return to the club he spent four years playing for.

Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira on Sunday with their team bottom of the Premier League.

Edwards is only 15 matches into a three-year contract as Boro coach, but has family in the area and Wolves was the club he played most for in his career as a centre-back. He also played for Barnsley.

Edwards did not taking training on Friday, his pre-match press conference was cancelled on Friday and when it was revealed on Saturday morning that he would not be taking the team for the Championship home game with Birmingham City, it was clear which way events were moving.

Coaches Adi Viveash and Harry Watling will take caretaker charge of the team against Blues, assistant by academy manager and former midfielder Craig Liddle.

Explaining their stance, Boro said: "We initially rejected an approach from Wolves on the basis that Rob signed a three-year contract with MFC less than six months ago.

"Following discussions with Rob we were disappointed to learn that he wanted to speak with Wolves regarding their head coach vacancy. We have now agreed terms with Wolves, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork."

With second-placed Stoke City at home to leaders Coventry City on Saturday, Boro have a good chance of moving back into the Championship play-off places with victory over Birmingham.
