Yoane Wissa nightmare continues - Newcastle United debut delayed again after injury update

Newcastle United are yet to see Yoane Wissa kick a ball following his summer switch from Brentford.

Eddie Howe has called for further time before throwing Yoane Wissa into Newcastle United action.

Toon fans are desperate to see their No.9, who joined the club from Brentford for £55million on deadline day. Wissa has not kicked a ball - whether that be in a game or training - for the Magpies since arriving.

He suffered a knee injury days after completing his Newcastle move while on international duty. There are concerns that Wissa might barely feature for United before representing DR Congo at the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

Eddie Howe gives Yoane Wissa update

Howe delayed Wissa’s return to early November while speaking to reporters last month. With that moment now upon us, it only felt right to question the Toon boss again on Wissa’s fitness.

However, any hopes of the 29-year-old debuting against his former club were soon banished. Howe said: "He's working well. He's on the grass and he's building his fitness. The knee is feeling good and there's no problems with that.

“It's more a case of looking at his fitness, sharpness, all the things he's going to need to put together. He's in a good place to kick on and push his body. We need to give him time to get robust enough and be in a position to give his best for the team. I'm sure he'll be worth the wait."

Yoane Wissa AFCON conundrum

Wissa’s injury woes are compounded as Newcastle know they will miss him during the AFCON break. The tournament takes place during the festive period - a chaotic stage of the season.

As it stands, Wissa will miss games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Burnley. Any further omissions depend on how DR Congo progress at the AFCON.

There have been calls for Wissa to prioritise Newcastle given his lack of action so far. However, the Magpies are helpless to stop the 29-year-old from competing for his country.
