The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be stuck in an endless cycle of mediocrity under head coach Mike Tomlin. Since the departure of the face of the franchise, Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers have tried quarterback after quarterback in the hopes of winning a playoff game.
Nothing seems to have worked. From Kenny Pickett to Justin Fields to Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh has now landed on four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers as the signal caller for the 2025 season. The results have been just as mediocre as in previous seasons, with the Steelers sitting at 5-3, and losing to teams they should beat easily, such as the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals.
It looks as if the ownership in Pittsburgh is starting to take note of Tomlin’s inability to get over the hump.
“Report: Steelers ownership growing ‘frustrated’ and ‘impatient’ with Mike Tomlin,” SteelersWire reported a last week.
Despite Tomlin’s struggles, one former NFL head coach and Super Bowl Champion believes Pittsburgh can still beat the league’s top teams, such as their matchup for this weekend, the Los Angeles Chargers.
“I love the Pittsburgh Steelers in this one. I just think the injury to Joe Alt at left tackle cripples this team. You can’t get hit as much as Herbert’s getting hit. The Steelers are gonna pepper him. They have too many good rushers,” Jon Gruden said.
“There’s gonna be more Steeler fans than you’ve ever seen in California. It’ll be like a road game for Herbert and Harbaugh. I love Aaron Rodgers. He’s playing consistent and I think they got a huge win and some confidence last week pulverizing the Colts. I’m with the Steelers, man.”
It’ll be interesting to see if Tomlin can prove Gruden’s prediction true.
