The 42-year-old, who was an assistant coach at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa, took charge of Valencia last year.

He remains under contract until 2027, but is under pressure to reverse the club's current slide, with just two wins all season.

Valencia are currently languishing in 19th in LaLiga, one point from bottom, following a 4-0 hammering away at Real Madrid.

Nevertheless, Corberan's Championship experience has seen him installed as a potential candidate at Middlesbrough.

Boro have been forced to start the process of replacing manager Edwards, after permitting him to speak to Wolves.

The former Luton boss is not on the touchline at the Riverside Stadium for the club's clash with Birmingham following recent developments over his future.

Edwards did not oversee Boro's first-team training on Friday, while his pre-match press conference was also cancelled.

A club statement read: "Middlesbrough Football Club have, subject to the completion of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves.

"We initially rejected an approach from Wolves on the basis that Rob signed a three-year contract with MFC less than six months ago.

"Following discussions with Rob we were disappointed to learn that he wanted to speak with Wolves regarding their head coach vacancy.

"We have now agreed terms with Wolves, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.

"First team coaches Adi Viveash and Harry Watling, and Academy manager Craig Liddle, will take charge of team affairs for Saturday’s game against Birmingham City at the Riverside."

Why did Corberan leave West Brom?

Valencia triggered Corberan's release clause - which was thought to be around £4million to take him from the Baggies last December.

At the time, West Brom were ironically level on points and goal difference with sixth-place Middlesbrough.

11 months later, Corberan could return to the Championship, with his old team in 15th, but Boro are currently third in the table.

Meanwhile, Edwards is closing in on joining Wolves, who are bottom of the Premier League and are currently the only winless side in the top four divisions of English football this season.

Wanderers relieved Vitor Pereira of his duties after a 3-0 defeat at Fulham last weekend.
