On Saturday morning, ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. reports that Trump wants the new Commanders stadium named after him.

President Donald Trump wants the Washington Commanders to name their planned $3.7 billion stadium after him, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.

A senior White House source said there have been backchannel communications with a member of the Commanders’ ownership group, led by Josh Harris, to express Trump’s desire to have the domed stadium in the nation’s capital bear his name. The new stadium is being built on the old RFK Stadium site that served as the team’s home from 1961 to 1996.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to ESPN about rumors that Trump wants the stadium named after him.

“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,”

It is worth noting that earlier this year, Trump threatened to block the stadium deal if the team didn’t bring back the Redskins name.

“I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins,’ and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders,’ I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington,” Trump said on social media.

The Commanders have reportedly declined to respond to ESPN’s report.
