The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed running back Trey Sermon to the active roster. With Jabrill Peppers still sidelined by a quad issue, Sermon will come up to the active roster and serve as the personal protector. That is where Sermon has shined over the last two games since Peppers went down with an injury.
However, the Steelers had to sign Sermon to the active roster, as he already used up all three of his practice squad elevations this season.
Sermon stood out in the preseason, notching 50 yards on 10 rushes and a touchdown while adding eight receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Sermon was a former star running back at Oklahoma and Ohio State. When he came out during the 2021 NFL Draft, Sermon thought the Steelers would draft him, but that was before they landed Najee Harris in the first round.
“I talked to them throughout the whole process quite a bit and met with them at the combine,” Sermon said. “I definitely thought they were going to draft me.”
Sermon played his first three seasons in Norman before transferring to Columbus. There, he impressed the Steelers and would have been high on their draft list. Instead, he landed with the San Francisco 49ers in the third round.
Sermon has played 42 career games to this point, and jumped around the NFL. He was in Pittsburgh for a rookie minicamp tryout, hoping to land another opportunity in the NFL before signing with the team in May.
One of the best games of his career came against the Steelers in 2023, when he rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries.
“They brought it up the first day, but just trying to take advantage of the opportunities I was given then,” Sermon said. “I’m glad to be here.”
Sermon has been around the league, including with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts. In his career, he has 506 yards rushing.
