Chelsea 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers: Blues dominant thanks to second half performance

Wolves remain winless in the Premier League after suffering a second consecutive 3-0 defeat to Enzo Maresca's Chelsea.

The Blues were on top for the majority of the first half, but failed to take a hold of the game - with Enzo Fernandez and Alejandro Garnacho squandering big chances.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half, with Garnacho finding Malo Gusto for his first career goal.

From there, the away side fell apart, with Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto adding a second and third in quick succession.

Wolves will take a handful of positives away from this match - namely their first half defensive showing and their late attacking efforts. However, given their performances over the last few weeks, the club's new head coach will have their work cut out.

Story of the Match

First team coaches James Collins and Richard Walker took charge of the Wolves dugout, amid the club's continued search for a successor to Vitor Pereira.

They will have pointed to the club's narrow 4-3 defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup last week - using it as a potential motivator for a side still in search of a league win.

With several teams above them dropping points, the Blues had an opportunity to move to second in the table and stay competitive in the league with a victory.

Enzo Maresca's team have been somewhat inconsistent as of late - and had to fight for a point against European side Qarabag in midweek.

Alejandro Garnacho scored in that fixture - and carried on his run of form in the opening few minutes of this game, first winning a free kick in a dangerous area before finding space for a shot on target.

It was a flurry of opening attacks from the home side, who had space on the wings to cross and a relentless pressure that helped to keep possession in Wolves' half of the pitch.

Enzo Fernandez came very close; his bouncing volley had the beating of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone but veered just over the crossbar.

Wolves did break on the counter, often via their attacking fullbacks. Jackson Tchatchoua found space for crosses from the right hand side, whilst Hugo Bueno combined well with forwards Jorgen Strand Larsen and Hwang Hee-Chan on the left.

The score remained 0-0 past the half hour mark, with Chelsea largely continuing to probe, create chances and dominate possession - but lacking a finishing touch.

Striker Liam Delap had been left isolated with very few touches of the ball whilst Joao Pedro failed to make a significant mark on the game. His best chance of the half came from the edge of the 18 yard box, but the Brazilian dragged his effort well wide and failed to test the goalkeeper.

Wolves looked brighter towards the end of the half but had been limited to zero shots on the Chelsea goal, and they would need to play with more bravery if they hoped to snatch a result away from home.

Pedro Neto had looked fairly quiet against his former side, but begun the second half confidently, as he got past Bueno with a burst of pace before sending a cross into the path of Liam Delap, which was cut out by the Wolves defence.

The Blues had begun with a lot more energy and quality, and found their opener after 51 minutes through Malo Gusto. The full-back shook off a first half knock to score his first goal for the club - arriving unmarked in the box to turn in a Garnacho cross.

Wolves needed to adapt their gameplay, and were now visibly more hungry for an equaliser - pressing their opponents as often as possible and keeping hold of the ball effectively.

They had only scored one goal away from home this season, however, which made a potential comeback more daunting.

Estevao was introduced on the hour mark, much to the delight of the home fans, who are more than aware of his exciting potential - in fact, some booed Maresca at half-time, demanding for the teenager to be introduced.

They got their wish, and within the span of a minute he made an impact: picking up the ball on the right wing, driving to the touchline and drilling a cross into the danger zone, where Joao Pedro was on hand to smash home Chelsea's second goal.

Pedro pointed to his compatriot in his celebrations - emphasising the difference he has made to the attack in only a short period of time.

Wolves needed to go all out in attack, but by contrast were giving Chelsea more opportunity to counter. Minutes after Pedro's second, they had their third - as Garnacho made a bombing sprint down the left wing before finding Pedro Neto unmarked for a tap-in.

A new head coach will have plenty of work to do with this Wolves side - as the organised and deep defensive line they had set up in the first half was completely dismantled.

Estevao did well to drag in several markers, which opened up the middle of the goal completely for Joao Pedro to drift into. His initial effort had to be tipped onto the bar by Johnstone, with the freshly substituted Marc Guiu almost turning the ball in from close range.

Wolves' substitutes added a positive impact in the latter stages of the game. Mateus Manue deserved a free kick after he was shoved from behind by Wesley Fofana just outside the Chelsea box - yet nothing was given.

Moments later, Marshall Munetsi made a great run from the right hand side and drilled a shot just wide of the far post.

Chelsea were content to defend in the last few minutes of the match, cutting out any last minute threats from the Wolves attack as they saw out a comfortable and dominant performance on the whole.

With three goal contributions in his last four games, Alejandro Garnacho is on a real hot streak at the moment.

The Argentine was a handful for Wolves full-back Jackson Tchatchoua as he regularly received the ball on the left flank, either making runs into the box or finding space to receive the ball.

He put together two well taken assists, but the second was the real standout - beating his marker with pace as he sprinted down the wing and drilling the ball into Pedro Neto for Chelsea's third.

Garnacho could make a permanent case for Chelsea's left wing with his continued strong form, and will have surely impressed head coach Enzo Maresca with tonights performance.
