Wolves vs Chelsea: Spirited Start, Painful 3-0 Defeat at the Bridge
ANDREW BENNETT REPORTS ON ANOTHER WOLVES DEFEAT IN THE CAPITAL
A spirited performance but all in all another defeat for Wolves.
The line ups
Wolves: Joshnstone, Tchatchoua, S.Bueno, Krejci, Toti, H.Bueno, Andre, J.Gomes, Bellegarde (Munetsi, 70), Hwang (Mane, 70), Larsen.
Chelsea: Sanchez, Gusto (James, 77), Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella, Fernandez (Santos, 82), Caicedo, Garnacho, Pedro (Gittens, 82), Neto (Guiu, 77), Delap (Estevao, 64).
The first half.
The game started off with pressure but no chances to talk about until Garnacho found space and brought a great save from Johnstone. Chelsea maintained their pressure with multiple set plays, including a free kick from Enzo which was tipped over the bar.
After the initial pressure Wolves coped well having sporadic counter attacks which often led to nothing, missing the final chance.
The half continued with not much from a Wolverhampton perspective and great credit to Tchatchoua who cleared off the line from a Chelsea effort direct from a corner. Chances directly from corners sum up Chelsea’s first half unable to break down a resolute and solid Wolves side.
The second half.
Five minutes into the half Garnacho was involved again putting in a delightful cross to the back post where Gusto and behind him Neto were waiting for the former to head home. Defensively Toti should’ve been closer to the runners but one mistake was enough and Chelsea took the lead.
Chelsea attacking their own fans continued to look in total control and doubled their lead when substitute Estevao came on beating his man cutting the ball back to Joao Pedro to smash it home from eight yards. Game over without a sniff from the visitors.
Quickly after it was 3-0 and Neto had the easiest finish of his career as Garnacho led the counter best Santi Bueno to put the ball on a plate for the former Wolves winger.
Shortly before Neto scored the final goal of the game Wolves brought on Mane and Munetsi who offered some more attacking pressure. With the best attacking moments of the game as young winger Mane ran at the Chelsea defence only to be penalised for a questionable foul, but nevertheless the greatest attacking moment in the second half. Shortly followed by a Munetsi effort fired wide on a first time shot as he was through after a defensive miscommunication.
The game ended 3-0 to the hosts and Wolves hope that a new manager and the international break can show something going forward. Another week more disappointment.
From my first Wolves match against Chelsea in 2003 I fell in love with the team and matchday experience. I work in digital marketing and have lived in Germany and Estonia over the past few years, this doesn’t stop me following Wolves and ensuring all my international friends become invested to the Wolf pack. I enjoy football, board games, a pint and travelling always excited to try new things. You will find me in the north bank on a matchday.
