Celtic are fighting to retain the services of Sebastian Tounekti
Celtic summer signing Sebastian Tounekti is believed to be attracting interest from south of the border with newly-promoted Leeds United emerging as contenders to sign the winger this winter.
Tounekti joined Celtic from Hammarby IF on deadline day in a deal worth around £5.2m. Since joining he’s racked up 16 appearances and has scored two goals across all competitions, with the most recent coming in a 4-0 win over Falkirk.
The Tunisian has adapted well to life in Scottish football despite the turbulence on the managerial front which saw Brendan Rodgers step down and Martin O’Neil return on an interim basis after a 20-year absence from Parkhead.
“It looks as if the Tunisian boy [Tounekti] is another outstanding find for Celtic in that area,” admitted former Rangers striker Kris Boyd earlier in the season.
Leeds United plot move for Sebastian Tounekti
Newly-promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United have been linked with a move for Sebastian Tounekti.
Football Insider understands the Whites have been hugely impressed with what they’ve seen from the Tunisian international so far as they look to add further quality to their squad this winter.
Leeds are currently 16th in the table, representing a steady start to life in the top-flight. But they remain only four points clear of the drop zone with three of the four clubs below them changing managers already.
They want another winger to compete with the likes of Daniel James, Wilfried Gnonto and Noah Okafor among others as they look to replace some of the output of last season’s star performer Manor Solomon.
Celtic make their stance clear on Sebastian Tounekti
Scottish champions Celtic have been heavily criticised for selling players in the past, and it was part of the reason Brendan Rodgers walked from the job last month. However, they are not thought to be entertaining any talk of Sebastian Tounekti leaving the club in the near future.
“It’s a strange link, I think, he only arrived at Celtic on deadline day when he joined from Hammarby.
“We know Leeds are in the market for attacking reinforcements in January if they can find them.
“I just don’t see Celtic being open to selling to Tounekti in January and as I said, the player has only arrived at the club, I’m sure he’s happy to stay and continue playing for Celtic as well.”
