As the game wound down to the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter, his University of Saskatchewan Huskies were able to finish a march down the field and win the Hardy Cup against the Regina Rams, 25-24, with Scott’s 25-yard field goal.

“I missed a game winner against the Manitoba Bisons earlier in the season,” said Scott, whose season-preserving kick came with 25 seconds on the clock. “Just kind of thinking back to that, I really wanted to be able to lift up the boys today and that’s exactly what I did.

“Every person dreams of it and it’s a huge moment … I just knew I was going to hit that kick,” he added.

The Rams led 24-9 after three quarters before Saskatchewan launched a fourth-quarter comeback. Although the Huskies were full of celebrations and smiles at Griffiths Stadium, the Rams were emotional after the loss, and coaches gathered the team for a meeting.

“I think we showed flashes of good Rams football and then at the end of the game, we just couldn’t execute,” Rams head coach Mark McConkey said.

“These guys did everything the right way and I am still proud of the players and the group,” he added.

The in-province rivalry kept everyone on edge with 801 total yards of offence. The Huskies, who allowed the fewest points-against in Canada West during the regular season, beat the British Columbia Thunderbirds 26-7 in last Saturday’s semifinal to advance.

Now they’ll host Ontario’s Queen’s Gaels in next weekend’s Mitchell Bowl, with the winner advancing to the Vanier Cup that will be played in Regina for first time ever.

“As a quarterback, that’s 100 per cent on me,” said Rams QB Owen Sieben. “I got to be better than that in the second half. I just love this team, man, and I love these fifth years. It’s the grittiest football team I’ve ever been on.”

The Huskies went 7-1 in the regular season, the Rams finished close behind at 6-2, and the teams were the top two in Canada West. Saturday’s game was looking more like a repeat of last year, when the Rams beat the Huskies in the final, until quarterback Jake Farrell threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The game, however, had a major bump along the way in the third quarter when a high snap was fumbled by Farrell and recovered by defensive back Brandon Wong for a 49-yard touchdown that ran Regina’s lead to 15 points.

Farrell got the offence going with 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Liam Piccinin in the beginning of the fourth quarter. It was then followed by a 19-yard TD dart to receiver Mason Grabowski with six minutes left in the game.

The offence that had no touchdowns all game was suddenly alive — the game plan had shifted from relying on the run, to letting Farrell air the ball out downfield.

“I started trusting what I was running. I think we were too uptight and not playing our game in the first half,” Farrell said. “I think as soon as we started leaning on one another and trusting each other, I think that’s what really flipped the switch.

“I love this team so much … it’s the reason I came here. I love the guys in the locker room.”

Huskies head coach Scott Flory said he is proud of the team.

“This group is resilient and just super fun to coach … they just never quit and never gave up. We made it hard on ourselves with a few turnovers, and a couple of misplays here and there.

“I believe in the kid (Lukas Scott),” Flory added of his kicker, who hit four field goals on the day. “We knew with the game on the line, we were going to go to him and you just knew he was going to make the play.”

Running back Ryker Frank, who rushed 22 times for 102 yards and caught six passes for 81, said the team’s “performance is hard to put into words.

“I am proud of the team for the way we fought back and we didn’t give up … I’m just honoured to be a part of this awesome team,” he said.

Rams star running back Marshall Erichsen tore his Achilles last week, and they missed his presence — running back Christian Katende rushed 14 times for 37 yards.

The Huskies had 428 yards of total offence and 27 first downs, to the Rams’ 373 yards and 20 first downs. Farrell completed 25 of 35 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns. Sieben notched 25 of 35 passes for 322 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Flory and the Huskies will now prepare for No. 8 ranked Queen’s Gaels next weekend. The Gaels knocked off No. 1 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks 30-27 in Ontario’s final. Kickoff will be 2:15 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium on Saturday.
