Injured Pistons guard receives unfortunate medical update

The Detroit Pistons are still waiting on some reinforcements at the point guard spot, but it’ll take a while longer before it comes.

Backup point guard Marcus Sasser has yet to make his season debut as his status with a right hip impingement has pushed make his availability since the start of the season. The Pistons finally put some of the mystique behind his absence behind as the team announced he will remain out to continue his rehab and will be re-evaluated in about four weeks.

Sasser played in a pair of preseason games for the Pistons before getting off the court due to his hip injury. The third-year guard spent early time alongside veteran guard Caris LeVert and Jaden Ivey — who had an arthroscopic procedure done just ahead of the season — on the injury report.

LeVert is the only one to debut this season of the three guards.

“They’re both progressing. It’s just going to be a matter of time, how they respond,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Sasser and LeVert on Oct. 26.

“They’re both doing stuff on the floor, but we always just have to wait and see how the next day is and make sure that we can stack continuous days of them getting better. And that’s where they are right now. So the plan’s in place and we’ll get them out there, obviously, as soon as they’re healthy.”

The 25-year-old hasn’t been involved with much activity publicly. He was seen at the open portion of the Pistons’ Nov. 5 shoot around, however his involvement in physical activity was limited.

The Pistons haven’t lacked for success without Sasser as they’ve jumped out to the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference with a 7-2 record, currently on a five-game winning streak.

But Detroit’s coaching staff had high hopes for Sasser to expand his contributions to the team after averaging 8.3 points, 3.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 19 minutes per game last season.

LeVert, Ausar Thompson and two-way guard Daniss Jenkins have all played more ball-dominant roles behind Cade Cunningham with Sasser sidelined.
