Daniel Farke has dismissed the idea that Leeds United strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha are lacking in confidence in front of goal despite their somber goal return so far.

The two free summer signings have scored just two goals between them and only Calvert-Lewin’s header against Wolves came from open play, with Nmecha scoring the winner in the opening day win over Everton from the penalty spot.

The pair have 800 minutes between them with 600 of those for main starter Calvert-Lewin. The England international is a doubt for Sunday’s game against Nottingham Forest with an adductor concern and so Nmecha could start his first game since August.

The reality is that neither player has found the net since that win over Wolves in September. Yet Farke says this has not disenchanted their confidence.

“I don't think Dominic is too down because he hasn't scored in the last few games,” he said. “I think he is a confident boy anyway. He knows that I was happy with his overall performances. He has helped win us one game with his crucial goal [vs Wolves].

“Yes he has missed one or two chances where he could have scored but that’s the fate of the striker, you can’t use them all. I also don’t think Lukas is struggling too much in terms of confidence - he’s even a bit more angry, like Joel Piroe, because they would like to play a few more minutes.

“But this is what you need to have as a striker - the belief and confidence in yourself. I talk a lot with my strikers and also tell them here and there a hit - but they have also made it to the top level.

Leeds United have slashed up to 50% off select kits and merch on their official club store, including this season's home shirt.

“If you play for England and Germany or the Premier League and Bundesliga you are already an outstanding striker. Then you can judge it in the proper way - they have scored goals all their life and know what to do.

“Sometimes they need a little reminder that we trust them and a recommendation on what we can improve but we have a great relationship. They know their manager trusts them.”
