Liverpool lineups vs Man City: Florian Wirtz left out as Andy Robertson call made

Tom Parsons

Not a single Liverpool player would be happy to drop to the bench following the Reds’ victory over Real Madrid, but Arne Slot may want one or two pairs of fresh legs for the tough trip to the Etihad Stadium.

Cody Gakpo will be raring to go after being benched in midweek and could come in for Florian Wirtz, who has been slow to adapt to the Premier League.

Curtis Jones, meanwhile, has looked impressive at times this season and could replace Alexis Mac Allister in the centre of the pitch, with the 2022 World Cup winner only recently returning to form.

For the first time this season, Arne Slot should name an unchanged line-up. Andy Robertson's legs will be tested but this is the last match before the international break so you ask him to go again.

Ideally the game state allows Milos Kerkez half-an-hour off the bench. Cody Gakpo has a good habit of popping up with goals but Florian Wirtz offers more to the team overall and is a pressing monster.

So he starts on the left again with Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and potentially Alexander Isak in reserve. Elsewhere, the midfield simply cannot be touched unless there's any new injuries.

Liverpool need their tried-and-tested midfield three to cope with Manchester City and the dynamism of Cody Gakpo. That means there is no place in the starting lineup for Florian Wirtz.

Who would have thought that by November, the £Xm duo of Wirtz and Alexander Isak would not be starting in one of the biggest games of the season, and it wouldn't be much of a surprise either.

Granted, Isak has been injured and could make the difference off the bench. Andy Robertson should keep his place unless deemed to have done too much work over the past week.
