Anthony Gordon decision made: Newcastle United predicted starting XI v Brentford

The 24-year-old has been feeling some discomfort in his hip in recent weeks, which forced him to withdraw in the first half of the Magpies’ 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club on Wednesday.

Newcastle’s attacking options have taken a hit this week with Will Osula ruled out due to an ongoing ankle problem. Yoane Wissa and Tino Livramento could return after the November international break.

On Gordon, Howe said: “We don't think it's a serious injury, but we're going to get him scanned and we're awaiting the results. I think there's every chance he might miss out on Sunday, but we’ll give him every opportunity to be fit.”

Eddie Howe’s side head to the Gtech Community Stadium eyeing a first Premier League away win since April.

Howe wants to see a reaction after he and his side came under criticism for their defeat at strugglers West Ham United last weekend.

“I think everyone shares that frustration,” Howe added. “I don't think it's just the players, it's the coaching staff, it's everybody, because we know what we're capable of. We know what we can deliver.

“West Ham was a long way short of that and we take responsibility for tha but we needed to make sure that we did respond. I think that there was a danger on Wednesday that a lot of talk about home form being very good and away form not so good, that then your home form can be affected. But I think it was a really strong, disciplined performance. We did what we needed to do.

“The only way we can answer our critics away from home is to deliver. And that's why I said I see this game as an opportunity to do that. And I know the players will be motivated to showcase that we can.”
