Nottingham Forest player earns late international call-up – World Cup hopes still alive

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper John has earned a call-up to the Brazil national team for their final fixtures of 2025. He replaces Corinthians’ Hugo Souza, who suffered a thigh injury.

As reported by Globo Esporte, the Brazilian FA confirmed the change on Saturday afternoon. John joined Forest from Botafogo earlier this year and will now work under Carlo Ancelotti with the national squad.

Hugo Souza, meanwhile, felt pain during training and was ruled out of Corinthians’ weekend match against Ceará. His club confirmed a muscle injury in his left leg shortly before the national team announcement.

Brazil will face Senegal on 15 November at the Emirates Stadium in London and Tunisia on 18 November in Lille. These matches close out Brazil’s schedule before the 2026 World Cup squad is named in May.

After releasing the updated list, Ancelotti said: “We are getting closer to the final list for the World Cup.” That means this call-up offers John a rare chance to impress. Some strong performances in the next few weeks could keep him in contention for a spot on the plane to the tournament.
