Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali put another boot into rumours surrounding return to Serie A

· 9 November 2025, 12:00

The evidence is stacking up against the many rumours surrounding Sandro Tonali and his fabled return home to Italy as the Newcastle United midfielder keeps shooting down the claims.

Even after Sandro Tonali refused to commit his long-term future to Newcastle after the win over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, the message from the Italian was still clear - he is happy on Tyneside and has no desire to leave. He simply refuses to openly say he's going to stay here for years because there's no way of knowing for certain what's going to happen in the future.

That didn't stop the Italian media from taking his comments, trimming off the end piece that said about him being happy and not wanting to leave and then adding 'homesick' rumours to sell the idea that he wants to return to Serie A.

Unfortunately for those disingenuous journalists, later that same day, Newcastle United published an interview with Tonali in which he spoke about his 'perfect' life in Newcastle and how happy he is here.

Sandro Tonali says he prefers the Premier League to Serie A

Now, just to put another boot in, Tonali was asked during an interview with Malaysian channel, Astro, whether he prefers the Premier League or Serie A, and the Italian gave an answer which likely won't have gone down too well back home.

“I prefer the Premier League, because the football here is quick, it’s more physical, more aggressive. We put everything on the pitch.

“In Italy, it’s a lot of tactics. I like tactics, because when I come back and play in the national team, we play and train a lot with tactics.

“I don’t know which is the best but, for now, I prefer the Premier League.”

How are the Italian journalists going to work this one to their advantage?

It's not looking good for those Italian journos, is it? How are they going to spin this one into a "Sandro wants to come home" story?

They've got around two months to find a way to stoke the fires again so they can sell their idea of a January switch to Juventus.

We've said it before, we'll say it again ... Sandro is a Geordie!
