Newcastle United fans should be excited after Adam Lawrence's comments on Sean Neave potential

Newcastle United youngster Sean Neave continues to catch the eye as he makes his way up from the academy.

Newcastle United fans would love to see more homegrown talent emerging through the youth ranks.

That has not always been Newcastle’s strong suit, but Sean Neave is sparking real excitement this season.

18-year-old Neave impressed Newcastle fans against Boston United in the National League Cup in October.

Neave has also bagged four goals in eight Premier League 2 games, leaving fans excited about his future.

Adam Lawrence shares verdict on Newcastle United’s Sean Neave

Neave scored twice against Burnley on Saturday, making another statement towards Eddie Howe in the process.

The journey to Newcastle’s first team is a long one, but Neave has received a strong verdict.

Newcastle Under-21 boss Adam Lawrence has now told The Chronicle that he thinks Neave has ‘really good potential’.

Lawrence added that Neave always looks like a ‘threat’ in the final third, but he is working to help the striker become a more ‘rounded’ talent’.

“I think Sean has got a lot of potential,” said Lawrence. “Obviously he’s got some clear things he’s going after in terms of his own development but in the short time I’ve been here, in the two months, I’ve been impressed with his level of performance and he looks like he has really good potential. He has to keep working, stay hungry and keep going – but he looks like he has some really good potential.”

“The manager (Howe) knows better than me in terms of expectations and what Sean needs in terms of the next level. But what Sean is getting the opportunity to do at the minute is sometimes he’s playing as a striker, sometimes he’s playing slightly deeper, so we are trying to help him become a more rounded footballer in terms of his understanding of positions.

“That opens up his options with the first team and how they are looking at Sean. He scored the penalty [against Athletic Club], he had a couple of moments around the box and he always looks like a threat and always looks like there’s a moment in him. We just have to keeping after those things,” he added.

Newcastle fans can feel excited about Sean Neave

Howe isn’t going to throw a young player into the first team for the sake of it, but he will be aware of Neave’s quality.

Newcastle are not exactly blessed with attacking options right now, either.

Yoane Wissa remains out of action, while William Osula is now struggling with an injury as well.

Nick Woltemade is Newcastle’s only recognised striker at the moment, so there could be an opening for Neave to make the bench at some point soon.

Comparisons to Adam Armstrong are inevitable, but Lawrence has already spotted the talent in Neave’s locker – and the prospect of a first-team breakthrough at some point in the future should excite supporters.
