Newcastle United Eddie Howe press conference review: Pre Brentford
Newcastle United team news v Brentford: A decision has been made on Anthony Gordon ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash.
Gordon picked up a hip injury during Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club in the Champions League at St James’ Park on Wednesday night. Despite being named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad on Friday, the winger has missed out on the trip to London due to injury.
It remains to be seen whether he will drop out of the England camp with his injury not thought to be serious.
Speaking on Friday, Howe said on Gordon: “We don't think it's a serious injury. We're going to get him scanned and we're awaiting the results.
“There's every chance he might miss out on Sunday but we'll give him every opportunity to be fit."
Ultimately, the 24-year-old has missed out on the squad as he was not seen with the travelling group arriving at the Gtech Community Stadium.
NUFC injury list
Gordon joins Tino Livramento, Yoane Wissa and William Osula as the Newcastle players ruled out for the match due to injury.
Livramento has been out since September with a knee injury while Wissa misses out on a game against his former club and is yet to make his debut for Newcastle following his £55million deadline day move from The Bees. It is hoped both players will be back in contention after the November international break.
Osula misses out after withdrawing from the matchday squad ahead of the win over Athletic Club due to an ongoing ankle issue.

Yoane Wissa latest
Wissa has been ruled out of the Brentford match and omitted from the DR Congo squad for the World Cup play-off match against Cameroon next week.
“Yoane's working well,” Howe said. “He's on the grass, he's building his fitness. I think the knee's feeling good, no problems with that.
“It's more a case of looking at his fitness, sharpness, all the things that he's going to need to put together. He's in a good place injury-wise now to really kick on and push his body.
“But we're going to need to give him time to get fit and robust enough. And in a position where he can give his best version of himself for the team. So how long that takes is slightly unclear. But yeah, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.”
NUFC ‘leader’ drafted into squad after a month out
In Gordon’s absence, Newcastle have drafted Jamaal Lascelles back into the matchday squad for the first time since the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest over a month ago.
The defender has not started a competitive game for The Magpies since March 2024, when he suffered an ACL injury in a 4-3 win over West Ham United.
