Anthony Gordon has made one change from the team that beat Athletic Bilbao in midweek.

Eddie Howe has made one change from the Newcastle United team that beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in the Champions League.

Jacob Murphy replaces the injured Anthony Gordon, who aggravated a hip problem on Wednesday. It is expected that Harvey Barnes will shuffle to the left flank after starting on the right in midweek.

Gordon - who has attracted criticism for performances in recent weeks - hobbled off shortly before half-time to raise injury fears. The Toon ace is yet to register a goal or assist in 19 Premier League appearances and he will not break that duck against Brentford today.

The £40million wideman has not travelled with his Newcastle teammates to the Gtech Community Stadium and England now face a decision over his involvement for upcoming internationals with Albania and Serbia. On Friday, Howe hinted at Gordon possibly missing out in West London.

“We don't think it's a serious injury,” he told reporters. "We're going to get him scanned and we're awaiting the results. There's every chance he might miss out on Sunday but we'll give him every opportunity to be fit."

Barnes has been given his first top-flight start since the 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 13. Murphy has been preferred to £55million summer arrival Anthony Elanga, who is still searching for his first Newcastle goal contribution.

The rest of the team remains unchanged, with Nick Pope between the sticks following his Champions League clean sheet. Kieran Trippier missed out through illness last weekend but looked assured as ever in Europe and starts alongside Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Dan Burn.

Howe has kept with his trusted midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes despite the latter admitting to NewcastleWorld that he struggled with flu against Athletic Club. Murphy and Barnes are attacking the wings either side of new cult hero Nick Woltemade.
