NUFC players arrive at the Gtech Community Stadium
Brentford 0-1 Newcastle United player ratings: Here’s how Sandro Tonali, Nick Woltemade, Harvey Barnes and co have fared so far.
Eddie Howe made one change from the side that beat Athletic Club 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday night with Jacob Murphy coming in for the injured Anthony Gordon. The change saw Harvey Barnes swap from the right to the left in Gordon’s absence, with Murphy starting on the right.
The Magpies went into the game still looking for their first Premier League away win of the season.
After a slow start, which saw Joelinton forced off due to injury, Newcastle took the lead against the run of play as Harvey Barnes scored for the third successive season at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Made a couple of reactive saves early on but misjudged a couple of balls into the box.
Kieran Trippier - 6
A mixed display down the right so far. Had a few chances to deliver balls into the box but failed to pick out a teammate.
Malick Thiaw - 7
Made an important interception to cut out a Brentford chance. Solid when Brentford were applying the pressure.
Sven Botman - 6
A couple of shaky moments defensively but also made an important block.
Dan Burn - 6
Tried to push forward and make an impact but that impact was limited to a couple of headers won.

Sandro Tonali - 5
Typically made a few interceptions to win the ball back but was quite wasteful with his passing in the opening exchanges.
Bruno Guimaraes - 5
Blasted over from the edge of the box with Newcastle’s first real opportunity of the game. Still looking a little laboured in possession after illness.
Joelinton - 5
Went down on a couple of occasions before being taken off midway through the first half. Offered little when he was on his feet and on the pitch.
Jacob Murphy - 5
The one change from Wednesday’s Champions League win. Had scored in his previous two Premier League outings but was quiet.
Harvey Barnes - 7
The only player offering some real attacking quality and threat in the first half as he opened the scoring after great composure in the box.
Nick Woltemade - 5
Set up Barnes’ goal with a smart touch inside the box. The ball wasn’t really sticking to him and he just looked a bit on the back foot.
Substitutes
Jacob Ramsey - 6
On for Joelinton 24: A couple of neat touches and hasn’t really put a foot wrong although still looks to be feeling his way into the game and getting used to playing alongside his teammates.
