Scott McTominay has urged Napoli to sign Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window, with the Scotland international speaking to Antonio Conte about his former teammate.

Mainoo has fallen drastically down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim. After being a regular last term, the 20-year-old has played just eight games so far this term.

Amorim has preferred Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in midfield in Premier League games, with Mainoo coming off the bench in seven of the first 10 games. However, he was an unused sub in the 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest and was left out of the squad entirely against Tottenham, due to a knock.

With United already out of the Carabao Cup and not playing European football, Mainoo's minutes are expected to be limited until the January transfer window, which could place his World Cup hopes in doubt.

A temporary move has been tipped ahead of the reopening of the window, with Napoli strongly linked. Previously, it had been reported that the Italian champions would be willing to pay his full salary to bring him to Naples.

Now, The Sun have reported that McTominay is doing all he can to reunite with Mainoo in Serie A. The 28-year-old left United in 2024 and scored 12 goals in his first season, winning the Scudetto.

Sources have told the outlet that McTominay has informed Conte that he should sanction a move to sign Mainoo. "Scott has been to see Conte and told him to get Kobbie," the source said.

"He's told him all about his strengths and what an outstanding player he is. He knows all about him from his time at United and thinks he would be a great addition to the squad, whether it's on loan or a permanent deal.

"Kobbie has been brought up the right way at United having been in the academy since he was a little boy. He would fit straight in and give Napoli a boost."

In a recent interview, Amorim admitted there simply isn't room for Mainoo in his squad. "Every minute we are using to prepare the future with a lot of games and less training," Amorim told beIN Sports.

"We are giving a lot of information, we are working on our fitness because we need to keep momentum during the week with good training, really intense."
