Packers Urged To Address Key Position In Offseason

The Green Bay Packers have almost every single thing they need to be the best team in the league. They’re stacked on both sides of the field.

That said, they’re not a perfect team either, and like every other roster, they can be improved. That’s particularly true when it comes to the cornerback position.

With that in mind, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report pointed out that they should emphasize and put a lot of effort into fixing that in the offseason. In his latest column, he said it should be the team’s No. 1 priority:

“Cornerback,” Gagnon wrote. “Even if you still believe fully in second-year second-round pick Javon Bullard, the fact is Nate Hobbs and Carrington Valentine have struggled quite frequently. There’s not a lot of certainty with that coverage unit, aside from Keisean Nixon. They’ll need to address this in free agency or the draft.”

Truth be told, it’s almost impossible to argue with that assessment. This season, the Packers have been hurt by poor offensive play-calling, subpar special teams play, struggles with run-blocking, and, especially, terrible cornerback play.

Jeff Hafley’s defense has been much better for this team since he took the reins of that unit last season. Still, they’ve given up way too many big plays.

They were either unable or unwilling to fix those woes at the trade deadline, and that could come back to haunt this team when it matters most.

They’re just too talented, and they’ve shown that they have the potential to hold their ground against the cream of the crop in this league. Then again, opposing teams also know that they can be beaten with deep shots down the field, and that’s going to be a major concern for the remainder of the season.
