Newcastle United player ratings v Brentford: 3/10 'disaster' & 'unfortunate' 6/10 in brutal 3-1 …

NUFC players arrive at the Gtech Community Stadium

Brentford 3-1 Newcastle United player ratings: Here’s how Harvey Barnes, Sandro Tonali, Nick Woltemade and co fared.

Eddie Howe made one change from the side that beat Athletic Club 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday night with Jacob Murphy coming in for the injured Anthony Gordon. The change saw Harvey Barnes swap from the right to the left in Gordon’s absence, with Murphy starting on the right.

The Magpies went into the game still looking for their first Premier League away win of the season.

After a slow start, which saw Joelinton forced off due to injury, Newcastle took the lead against the run of play as Harvey Barnes scored for the third successive season at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Newcastle were able to keep Brentford at bay for the remainder of the half as they led 1-0 at the break. But within 12 minutes of the restart Brentford drew level as Kevin Schade headed in from a long throw into the box.

Brentford then turned the game around as Dan Burn brought down Dango Ouattara in the box and was sent off and conceded a penalty as a result. Igor Thiago stepped up and sent substitute goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to make it 2-1 to the home side.

Thiago then grabbed his second and Brentford’s third in stoppage time as he latched onto Malick Thiaw’s challenge to make it 3-1.

Misjudged a couple of balls into the box but made several good saves to deny Brentford. Flapped at the long throw that led to the hosts’ equaliser.

Kieran Trippier - 4

Poor at both ends. Had a few chances to deliver balls into the box but failed to pick out a teammate.

Malick Thiaw - 6

Made an important interception to cut out a Brentford chance. Solid when Brentford were applying the pressure. Was unfortunate his challenge fell kindly to Thiago for Brentford’s third.

Sven Botman - 4

Made an important block in the first half but was also guilty of a few shaky moments defensively. Was slow to react for Brentford’s third.

Dan Burn - 3

Was a disaster waiting to happen at times in the second half after being fortunate to avoid a penalty after a trip on Dango Ouattara was deemed a dive. But it wasn’t second time lucky for the defender as his second challenge saw him concede a penalty and shown a red card.

Sandro Tonali - 4

Typically made a few interceptions to win the ball back but was quite wasteful with his passing.

Bruno Guimaraes - 4

Blasted over from the edge of the box with Newcastle’s first real opportunity of the game. Looked laboured in possession after illness.

Joelinton - 4

Went down on a couple of occasions before being taken off midway through the first half. Offered little when he was on his feet and on the pitch.

Jacob Murphy - 4

The one change from Wednesday’s Champions League win. Had scored in his previous two Premier League outings but took until the 66th minute to put a decent cross into the box. Often sloppy and struggled to impose himself on the game physically as he just went through the motions down the right.

Harvey Barnes - 6

The only player offering some real attacking quality and threat in the first half as he opened the scoring after great composure in the box. Had a good opening to make it 2-0 early in the second half but couldn’t find a teammate with his low cross. Volleyed over in the second half from distance.

Nick Woltemade - 4

Set up Barnes’ goal with a smart touch inside the box. The ball wasn’t really sticking to him and he just looked on the back foot.

Substitutes

Jacob Ramsey - 5

On for Joelinton 24: A couple of neat touches in the first half but was caught in possession early in the second which led to a good opportunity for Brentford.

Aaron Ramsdale - 5

On for Pope 76: His first job was to pick the ball out of the net after the penalty.

Lewis Hall - 5

On for Barnes 76: Put a low cross into the box that almost saw Newcastle grab an equaliser. Gave possession away on a couple of occasions.

Anthony Elanga - 5

On for Murphy 76: Barely had a touch.

Joe Willock - 5

On for Tonali 76: A couple of touches but couldn’t help Newcastle find an equaliser and instead watched on as they conceded a third.

Lewis Miley - n/a

On for Guimaraes 90: A late introduction.

Next up for Newcastle United is Manchester City at home after the international break.
