Disappointing Cherries smashed 4-0 by hosts Aston Villa

The Cherries trailed by two at the break after a poor first half, as Emiliano Buendia scored direct from a free kick and Amadou Onana made it two for the hosts.

Bournemouth were much better in the opening exchanges of the second period and went close through Alex Scott and Evanilson, but momentum shifted back to the hosts after Emi Martinez saved an Antoine Semenyo penalty.

Villa regained control of the game after that and stretched their lead in the final 25 minutes, substitutes Ross Bakley and Donyell Malen both scoring to secure the points for the hosts.

The result saw Villa move above Bournemouth on goal difference, the two teams on 18 points with the Cherries now sat ninth.

Andoni Iraola made four changes to the team which was beaten by Manchester City last weekend.

Veljko Milosavljevic, Adam Smith, Justin Kluivert and Evanilson all returned to the starting XI, in place of Bafode Diakite, Alex Jimenez, David Brooks and Junior Kroupi, who all dropped to the bench.

There was early concern after a nasty-looking collision between Smith and Tyler Adams after four minutes.

The right back was forced off for Jimenez following a long delay, but the American was able to continue.

Djordje Petrovic was caught in two minds as Matty Cash was played in on the right, but the Serbian was able to track back and save the Polish international’s attempted chip.

The Cherries keeper saved down to his left shortly after as Boubacar Kamara shot from just outside the box.

Scott, fresh off the back of his first call up to the England senior squad, struck the crossbar direct from a corner with 15 minutes on the clock.

Marcus Tavernier was the next to threaten Emi Martinez’s goal, as he powered just over the bar from a free kick in the D after Scott was fouled.

But a free kick in a similar position saw the hosts take the lead after 28 minutes.

Buendia was fouled by Jimenez chasing onto a Matty Cash ball over the top and it was Buendia who stepped up to clip the ball over the Cherries wall, under the bar and past Petrovic.

Villa were firmly on top and they continued to threaten after the goal.

Milosavljevic blocked an Ollie Watkins shot, before Petrovic had to be alert to save a deflected cross.

Some good last ditch defending took the ball away from an arriving Watkins, and the striker was denied again by Milosavljevic, as the Serbian diverted his shot behind for a corner.

Petrovic made a vital stop to deny Watkins, as the Englishman continued to threaten.

Moments later, though, it was two for the hosts as Onana drilled the ball in at the near post from 25 yards, after the Cherries had given the ball away in their half.

Kluivert dragged a shot wide as the first half entered seven added minutes, before Martinez saved from a Jimenez effort from outside the box on the right.

Lewis Cook replaced Jimenez at half time, as the Cherries sought a way back into the game.

They saw more of the ball in the opening exchanges and went close to getting one back as Scott saw a shot deflected over Martinez, but the Argentine tracked back to palm it over the bar brilliantly.

Not long after the Cherries went close again, as Evanilson saw a header from a corner strike the base of the post, before Truffert saw his follow up shot deflected wide.

Iraola made three changes shortly after the hour mark, bringing Kroupi, Ryan Christie and Amine Adli on for Kluivert, Scott and Truffert.

The Cherries were awarded a penalty with 65 minutes on the clock as Evanilson headed a corner back across goal into the arm of Morgan Rogers.

But Semenyo was denied from the spot by Martinez, who got down low to his right to save the Ghanaian’s effort.

Rogers curled an effort just wide of Petrovic’s post, before Villa extended their lead.

Substitute Barkley rose to meet Lucas Digne’s corner and he flicked the ball into the net at the far post to put the game beyond Bournemouth with 13 minutes to play.

Brooks replaced Evanilson after the goal, before the hosts made it four five minutes after the third.

It was another goal from a corner as the set piece was passed to Youri Tielemans on the edge of the box, who shot, and Donyell Malen got a touch to divert the ball past Petrovic just a minute after coming on.

Milosavljevic denied Malen a second goal with four minutes to play as he blocked the forward’s shot, before the striker shot wide when well placed in the Bournemouth box.

That proved to be the final effort on goal as the Cherries were well beaten in a poor display at Villa Park.
