Newcastle United player ratings vs Brentford as 4/10 star brutally exposed yet again

Dan Burn was among the worst performers as Newcastle United lost 3-1 to Brentford.

Burn was sent off for Newcastle United as Eddie Howe’s side threw away another lead to lose an away game in the Premier League once more.

This is a team in crisis. The Champions League has offered some kind fixtures to Howe but there’s no getting away from the fact that the start to the league season has been a disaster.

Indeed, it was another turgid away game and one many would have seen coming.

Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead before Kevin Schade brought the hosts onto level terms. Dan Burn was sent off after giving away a penalty, from which Igor Thiago scored before the Brazilian forward bagged his brace late on.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players….

Nick Pope – 5

Should have done much better for the first goal and rarely looked convincing all game. He remains capable of some fine saves but his flaws are increasingly evident. Erratic.

Kieran Trippier – 6

Solid and unspectacular. An improvement on Emil Krafth’s performance last weekend but far from at his best.

Malick Thiaw – 7

Remains the best of a bad bunch. Without him, Newcastle would be in an even worse position.

Sven Botman – 6

Botman’s form has tailed off massively. He got toyed with at times and the lack of recovery pace is becoming increasingly evident.

Dan Burn – 5

Made some crucial interventions in the first half but is so brutally exposed as a left-back week after week. While not totally his fault, by the time he was sent off after giving away a penalty it was no surprise.

Burn had been lucky an earlier call had been denied. Needs to return to centre-back.

Sandro Tonali – 7

Like Thiaw, Tonali is one of few bright spots in this Newcastle team. Wasn’t brilliant today but certainly not as bad as some of the others.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6

Caught on the ball far too many times. Looked way off it, as he has done in most away games over the past few months.

Stepped up a bit when down to ten men but generally poor.

Joelinton – 5

Went off injured early and, frankly, didn’t play very well before that happened.

Jacob Murphy – 5

Did well in the build-up to the goal but faded quickly. His desire to shoot from difficult angles is hugely frustrating.

Nick Woltemade – 5

Nice flick for the goal but otherwise very quiet. Newcastle aren’t getting the best out of him but he’s got to up his game. Got bullied.

Harvey Barnes – 6

Brilliant goal from Barnes but that was about it.

Subs:

Jacob Ramsey – 6

Joe Willock – 5

Lewis Hall – 5

Aaron Ramsdale – 5
