The Kansas City Chiefs have already lost four games this season. This isn’t where they expected to be at the midpoint of the campaign, and while they’re better than their record shows, they should still be worried.
To add insult to injury, they couldn’t make any move at the trade deadline. It’s not like they didn’t try, though.
According to multiple reports, GM Brett Veach tried to trade for New York Jets star running back Breece Hall. However, he only offered a fourth-round selection rather than the third-round pick they reportedly asked for.
Now, according to a report by Adam Schefter, it seems like he also failed to bolster the team’s defense. Apparently, he almost traded for Seattle Seahawks LB Boye Mafe:
“A near deal: At Tuesday’s NFL deadline, the Chiefs made a late strong push to acquire Seahawks linebacker Boye Mafe, per sources. Some thought the deal would get done; one source even thought it was completed. But right before the deadline, Seattle opted to hold on to Mafe,” Schefter posted on X.

For weeks, there were rumors about the Chiefs looking to add more firepower to their defensive line. Ultimately, they brought back veteran DT Mike Pennel. Then again, he will most likely be someone to make up for the season-ending loss of rookie DT Omarr Norman-Lott.
Steve Spagnuolo’s defense hasn’t been as sound as in previous years, but it’s still a solid unit. Of course, they need to be more than ‘solid’ to go all the way.
Brett Veach has usually done a good job of identifying areas of need to bolster the roster. Still, it seems like he overplayed his hand and thought that he had more leverage than he actually had. Now, the Chiefs can only hope this won’t come back to haunt them.
