Daniel Farke defends Leeds substitutions and Willy Gnonto snub

Sheffield United, Leeds United and FA Cup - The YP FootballTalk Podcast

Daniel Farke defended his selections and substitutions after Leeds United’s second consecutive away defeat handed Nottingham Forest afirst Premier League victory since the opening weekend.

But they conceded within a couple of minutes and Farke felt that and Forest’s second goal, were pivotal.

"It's quite normal that fans are disappointed and angry after a loss, as we all are," stressed Farke. "At this level, small details are always decisive and there were a few details that were not good enough.

"From a great finish from Lukas Nmencha and we should not tgive this lead away so easy and so cheaply just 90 seconds or whatever later.

"We should put more pressure on the ball, be more on it in the duels and we gave it away too easily, I think this was a decisive moment.

"And the second decisive moment was the 2-1, the first big mistake by the referee. I think he was the only one in the whole stadium who saw a foul from Anton Stach – it was 100 per cent a foul against him.

"They put the ball long, from the second ball a cross comes in, they score. We could have dealt with the cross better, it was not too difficult to defend. We should definitely have marked (Gibbs-White) better, something we addressed the whole week.

"Then 2-1 down, 20 minutes to go you take more risks, you bring many offensive players on, and we had to open up a bit more."

Forest's second goal was created by Omari Hutchinson, who crossed for Morgan Gibbs-White to glance in a header from far too much space. Winger Hutchinson had recently come on in a triple substitution.

Farke did not make any changes until his side was 2-1 down and one of those he brought on, Jack Harrison, clipped Hutchinson's heels to allow Elliot Anderson to round the victory off with a penalty.

Asked if he was tempted to make changes sooner, Farke explained: "Our set-up was working, I think, because the feeling was the longer it's a draw, or we are in the lead, the more pressure is on Nottingham.

"Dominic Calvert-Lewin was just ready for 30 minutes (after an adductor strain).

"(We brought on) Jack Harrison, more or less as a very offensive-thinking forward (at left-back). I don't blame him for the penalty situation, it was a bit clumsy, but we wanted to take the risk."

Farke had said before the game Willy Gnonto would be fit to play after two week's training but he left the Italian out of his squad.

"He was an option from the bench, but we decided we didn't want to take the risk,” he said. “Now we have two more weeks of training."
