Igor Thiago double helps Brentford to back-to-back home wins over Newcastle

It capped off an wonderful second-half display as Brentford dominated and made it successive wins over a Newcastle side that have had the upper hand against them in recent seasons.

They started the game brightly after with Mikkel Damsgaard's free-kick being pushed by Nick Pope, with Igor Thiago unable to put in the rebound. To say the opening 20 minutes was cagey would be an understatement with neither looking particularly threatening.

However, Newcastle made Brentford pay as neat work on the right-hand side saw Harvey Barnes twist and turn in the penalty area before finishing past Caoimhin Kelleher to give Eddie Howe's side the lead going in to the break.

Brentford started the second-half on the front foot, with Yehor Yarmoliuk denied at the near post by Nick Pope. They would be rewarded for their resistance just minutes later through Kevin Schade.

Michael Kayode's lethal throw-in was misjudged by Nick Pope, and the German had the simple task of heading in to an empty net to give Brentford the equaliser their second-half start merited.

Brentford had their tails up and they were controversially denied a penalty after VAR had ruled Dango Ouattara had dived from Dan Burn's challenge, but replays shown that Burn kicked the Brentford forward's foot before going down.

Angered by that injustice, they were given a penalty after Ouattara was fouled by Burn and this time, he was given his marching orders.

Thiago stepped up and slotted home from 12 yards past substitute keeper, Aaron Ramsdale, to give Brentford the lead for the first time. It was nothing more than they deserved in what was a dominant second-half performance.

There was still more time for Brentford to add to their tally as Thiago sealed Brentford's victory after Malick Thiaw's tackle on Reiss Nelson saw the ball diverted in to his path and he slotted home for his second of his afternoon and ensured Brentford won back-to-back home games in the league for the first time since May.

The win sees them go 12th, just three points off the top four. Next up after the international break is a trip to Brighton before finishing November with a home game against Burnley.
