The first big chance came for City after 13 minutes, after Giorgi Mamardashvili fouled Doku inside the box, but the Liverpool shot-stopper redeemed himself by springing to his left to expertly palm away Erling Haaland’s spot-kick.
However, shortly before the half-hour mark, our towering No.9 was not to be denied, superbly looping a header into the far corner from Matheus Nunes’ curling cross, taking his overall Premier League tally to 99 goals.
The visitors thought they levelled shortly after, but Virgil Van Dijk’s header was ruled out for Andy Robertson being in an offside position.

With the clock deep in first-half stoppage time, midfielder Nico struck from distance and saw the ball clip off Van Dijk’s foot and fly into the net, doubling our lead before the interval.
Cody Gakpo was introduced for the Reds shortly after the break and should have pulled a goal back, but blazed his effort over the bar from a promising position inside the box.
Doku took centre stage a few moments later and got the goal that his performance deserved, cutting inside from the left and curling a superb strike into the top corner to put us in a commanding position.
The Belgian was named Player of the Match after having 11 touches in Liverpool’s box and completing seven dribbles, the most of any player on the pitch.
We remained in control of possession and stayed resolute to claim a clean sheet and all three points, taking us four points behind league-leaders Arsenal.
