Kieran Trippier issues apology to Newcastle United fans after deja vu Brentford defeat

Kieran Trippier applauds fans after NUFC's 3-1 defeat at Brentford

Newcastle United latest news: Kieran Trippier has apologised to supporters following their defeat against Brentford in the Premier League.

‘We apologise’, that was the message from a downbeat Kieran Trippier as he and his Newcastle United teammates trudged away from the Gtech Community Stadium having once again fallen to a 3-1 reverse.

Just seven days after they left the London Stadium with zero points and having shipped three without reply, the Magpies had that familiar sinking feeling in the capital on Sunday afternoon as goals from Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago inflicted Eddie Howe’s side their fifth Premier League defeat of the season. With strong echoes of eleven months ago when they were undone as Storm Darragh ripped its way through the United Kingdom, Eddie Howe and his players once again left the Gtech Community Stadium turf having been beaten, battered and bruised by Brentford.

Harvey Barnes’ opener promised a glimmer of hope for the travelling group, but those hopes were extinguished in the second period, replaced, like a phoenix from the flame, with a similar feeling that many of the travelling support hoped had been firmly left behind them last week.

Illness kept Trippier out of the squad last weekend, but his return to the starting side didn’t bring with it a change in fortunes. As one of the leaders of this squad, Trippier fronted up to questions following the game, particularly around his side’s struggles on the road: “I think, first half, we didn't particularly play great. I don't think either side did, but we came in at half-time 1-0.

“We all accept and we all know the away form is not up to scratch, but we've been working on it. Nobody's hiding from the fact that we've not won away from home.

“The supporters have travelled so far and we understand that and we apologise for that, but maybe the break has come at the right time. Who knows? But yes, we've been in this situation before and for sure we'll bounce back 100% and that is without a doubt.”

Were any strong words said in the dressing room following yet another capitulation away from home this season?

“I wouldn't say any arguments or anything,” Trippier responded. “We've got a lot of experienced players in the dressing room, we've all discussed it.

“The leadership group, as a team, the manager has fully put a stamp on it. But all we can do as players, it's not the managers, it's the players who need to step up away from home.

“There's no excuses because the record at home is top, away it's not, but as players we need to take responsibility, which we will do as I’m standing here now speaking to you guys.

“We'll take it on the chin. Obviously it's not the best way of putting it, but all we can do is apologise to the fans. All I can say is that the lads are giving everything.”

He added: “All we can do is, and the most important thing is stick together because as I said in the dressing room after the game before, I've never been in a better group.

“We'll come through. It's about clicking and it will happen. Maybe as I said before, the break has come at the right time for us as players and as a team.”

Jamaal Lascelles, a man who didn’t step foot on the Gtech Community Stadium pitch on Sunday and hasn’t kicked a ball in over a month, also fronted up to the media post-match. Dan Burn, as per Premier League rules following his red card, was not permitted to speak.
