One former NFL player thinks the Jets should use their newly acquired draft capital to make an unprecedented trade offer for a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, suggesting they package four or five first-round picks to land Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
On Sunday’s “NFL on Fox” pregame show, the panel weighed in on the Jets’ direction. Former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski said he liked the Jets getting the first-round picks when they traded cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. He thinks they will use the picks to go after a player like Burrow.
“I think they need the quarterback of the future, and they’re going to get it through the draft, or they’re going to make a trade for a veteran that’s in their 20s right now,” Gronkowski said. “I saw a report. Maybe Joe Burrow, possibly. You give them four or five first-rounders. That’s what they have in store. They need something. They need a spark, somehow, some way, eventually. ... They’re desperate.”
Nearly all the other analysts began to laugh after Gronkowski mentioned how many first-round picks he would include in the trade, including former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan.
“He was sounding good until he said that part,” Strahan said.
The discussion about Burrow heading to the Jets heated up last Thursday after a segment on ESPN’s “Get Up” talked about the possibility of Burrow leaving the Bengals, with ESPN insider Adam Schefter discussing what could be going through Burrow’s mind.
“We’re just talking,” Schefter said. “How do you think Joe Burrow feels about the Bengals’ defense and the offensive line that’s protecting him?”
Burrow, who has been named to the Pro Bowl twice and led the Bengals to Super Bowl 56, is on injured reserve with a turf toe injury and has played in only two games this season. Burrow is under contract with the Bengals through the 2029 season after signing a five-year, $275 million contract extension in 2023. He is currently on injured reserve with a turf toe injury and has appeared in only two games this season.
